The Importance of Prayer
1 Corinthians 3:9 says, “For we (Christians) are laborers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” I want you to notice that God is looking for a partnership with Christians. Part of that laboring together with God is through prayer. There are certain things that will not come to pass in your life if you do not specifically ask for it. James 4:2 says that you have not because you ask not. God has chosen to limit Himself according to our prayers. There may be some things in your life that you are wanting to happen, but God may be waiting on you to pray for that situation to allow it to come to pass in your life. Have you ever felt the Holy Spirit prompt you to pray for a person, situation, etc? Let me ask you this; if our prayers don’t pull any weight with God or don’t matter, why would He prompt us to pray? That means if God could just do it on His own without a person praying His will into that situation, He is just wasting His time prompting you and I to pray. The answer is obvious; God chooses to limit Himself according to our prayers.
God gave mankind authority on this earth, so God set that spiritual law into motion. In fact, Jesus had to come to this earth as a man to have authority and make it legal for Him to redeem mankind. He had to put on an earth suit, a physical body, to have authority on this earth. Some people say, “God can do whatever He wants any time He wants to do it, and we have absolutely no part to play in it.” That is not true according to the Bible. Ezekiel 22:30-31 reveals to us that God was looking for someone to make up the hedge and stand in the gap or to intercede in a certain situation so that the people wouldn’t be destroyed. Notice that God was looking or searching for a person to stand in the gap to intercede. If our prayers do not make a difference on this earth, why was God looking for a person to pray for that situation? God needed a willing vessel on this earth to pray for His will in that situation. So what happened? God could not find a person to pray or intercede, and those people were destroyed. This reveals to us that not everything that takes place on this earth is the will of God.
In Matthew 9:37 Jesus said, “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth laborers into His harvest.” That verse is implying that if we as Christians don’t pray for laborers to be sent into the harvest, they won’t. There are many other examples in the Word of God that reveals to us the importance of prayer in order for the will of God to be fulfilled on this earth. There is unlimited power available to the Christian who is totally yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit and who prays in-line with the Word of God. When you realize the importance of prayer and pray according to the will of God, you will see results!
