How to Eliminate Fear

Fear is an enemy to the Christian.  Just as faith attracts the things of God into your life and pleases Him, fear invites the things of the devil into your life and pleases the enemies of your soul; Satan and evil spirits.  It is a known medical fact that people who struggle with fear are more likely to get attacked with sickness and disease in their lives; the immune system even weakens when fear is present!  Most doctors even realize the chance of a person surviving a life threatening disease is very slim when fear overtakes hope; medical science is finally catching up with the Word of God that was written thousands of years ago!  Fear and faith cannot co-exist in an individual; you either have fear or faith active in your life or in a circumstance.  2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  There is a spirit or demon of fear.  That scripture is literally contrasting the spirit of fear to the characteristics of the Holy Spirit.  So according to that scripture, when you are under the influence of the spirit of fear, you will not walk in power, your love walk will be off balance, and you will not have a sound mind.  The whole purpose of the devil trying to put fear on the Christian is to steal your faith, hope, and joy in God and in His written Word.  Fear is a magnifying glass that will try to make your problem seem bigger than God and His promises.  It will always try to undermine and take away from the Word of God.  When you and I are faced with a trial or circumstance, we have a choice to make; will we stand on God’s promises or are we going to allow fear to have the upper hand in our life?  Our will is involved.

The cure for fear cannot and will not be found in the natural or in natural things such as money, job security, alcohol, etc.  It is a spiritual problem and demands a spiritual solution.  We are in a spiritual battle on this earth as Christians against Satan and evil spirits according to the Word of God (Ephesians 6:12).  Everything that takes place in the natural has a spiritual root; after all, we as humans are first and foremost spiritual beings.  We are a spirit being that possesses a soul (mind, will, and emotions), and we live in a physical body.  That is why you see so many people in bondage and miserable; they are trying to solve their spiritual problems with natural solutions; at best it will only mask the problem for a while, not solve it.  Don’t ever forget this; outside of the Lord Jesus Christ being at the center of your life there is no remedy or deliverance from fear and other bondages.

David had many opportunities to fear in his life and we all have that same opportunity.  But David made the choice to exalt God and His promises rather than the problem (Psalms 27): he realized that his help in the battle or circumstance didn’t come from anything in the natural realm, but from God alone.  David was able to make bold declarations of his faith in God.  How was he able to do that?  By keeping a pure heart.  When he messed up and sinned, he let go of the past failures.  He was able to tap in and hold on to the mercy and grace that God extends to all those that will repent and put God at the center of their life.  Fear is a trust problem in God.  Many are trying to punish themselves about their past sins and failures.  They view God’s mercy and grace from a natural human perspective rather than just believing what God has written in His Word; the Bible.  So when a problem arises in their life, they think, “Why would God want to help me after I have messed up so much in my life?”  When God says that He will forgive you and throw your sins into the deepest part of the ocean to remember them no more when we confess our sins and repent, that is exactly what He means.  You don’t have to understand and mentally grasp it; just believe it with child-like faith!  Having a pure heart and pure conscience before God will cause you to latch on and trust Him in a greater way.

Psalm 27:4 reveals that David was seeking the Lord with his whole heart; he wanted to dwell in God’s presence.  This was not just a five minute devotional every night before going to bed; this was a lifestyle for David.  David was humble.  Humility will cause you to seek God and His way of doing things.  Pride will cause you to seek your own way of doing things in life apart from God and His Word.  Therefore, to eliminate all fear, you must eliminate all pride in your life.  Every decision that we make, every word that we speak, every action we take must run through the filter of God’s Word.  When we believe and yield ourselves to God’s Word with child-like faith, and we seek the Lord with our whole heart, fear will have no place to land in your life as a Christian.  I want to encourage you to let go of your past failures, make the Lord Jesus Christ the center of your life, and take hold of God’s glorious future and hope for you today!
